Figure painting was the starting point for me in making art. I was drawn to it initially because there is something so wonderfully complex and compelling about human form, movement and expression. In painting urban landscapes too, I like to convey a sense of the presence of people in my work even when they are not physically present.

Mostly I like to work in oils and to explore different colour palettes. And although I’m interested in the aesthetics of what I’m making, for me painting seems like an attempt to capture something vital – like an individual’s physical expression, their energy or calm composure. At other times perhaps a sense of ambiguity or a mood of intrigue.
